I've been recommending this book since i read it.
Blindness - from Jose Saramago - He is a Portuguese Nobel prize winner and you will not get disappointed.
The book is a novel about a country (not mentioned which) that everybody goes blind, except...
Imagine chaos at most elevated level. He will tell you a lot about the subject.
Hundreds applied for permission to produce a movie and Mr Saramago just authorized with the City of God director Fernando Meirelles.

I found "Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" really funny but the trick to enjoy the book is to adandon reason because it has a crazed view point.
Also, another funny book was Ellen Degeneres' "My point of view and yes I do have one"

I recommend Tom Sharpe. Read «Wilt», one of the most funny novels in History, about a clumsy teacher who wants to murder his wife.
