uncle sid - darts is not actually recognised as a sport in the UK by BSA. There is no reason for this as darts is about throwing a small pointy impliment for acuracy just like archery (which is officially a sport). The reason BSA give is that darts is associated with "alcohol, smoking and unhealthy lifestyles". This is absurd as a lot of the new upcoming players (particularly the dutch) are teetotalers.

Ten pin bowling equally is not classified as a sport in the UK for simillar reasons, plus it is not treated as a serious competitive game here unlike darts, more of a pastime.

There is a claim that both should be reclassified but then where do you draw the line? skittles, hopskotch?

Do you mean it's not an Olympic sport? There's no good reason why people should not call it a sport as it does involve a certain amount of physical exertion and skill. Darts and Snooker certainly involve skill but no way do I call them a sport. You might as well call Toad-in-the-hole (classic Sussex game) or skittles sports in that case.

I think it is all driven by the market. If people can make money on it, the sport will be promoted more.
