You could try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.

Whenever I have computer issues that stump me, I always resort to System Restore, which brings your computer setup back to a certain date without affecting your files saved past the restore date. But System Restore could only work if you turned in on beforehand and you or the computer made a restoration point.

To do a System Restore, click on Start then all programs... then go to Accessories>System Tools> the System Restore icon should be at the end of that list.

Once at the System Restore screen, (assuming your System Restore is on), Click on "Restore my computer to an early time" then click Next where you will be shown a calendar. Choose a date right before you saw the problem and follow the rest of the instructions.
