Backorder is just a distribution term that refers to the status of items on a purchase order in the event that some or all of the inventory required to fulfill the order is out of stock. This differs from a forward order where stock is available but delivery is postponed for another reason.

Different computer systems will handle back orders in different ways. Typically received stock is allocated first to back orders. These orders are then available to be fulfilled in the normal way.

hopefully!

That means the company has sold more than they currently have in stock and they have ordered more from the distributor or is waiting for more to be made. Depending on what it is, an item could be backordered for a couple days to a couple weeks or a month or more.

If you order something online or from a catalog and the company does not have the item in stock, it is backordered, meaning they will ship it to you when they get more of that item from their source.
