They're usually very insecure people that take out their frustrations on others they perceive as an "easy" target.

People bully others because they want to feel big and powerful, that why they bully others in front of a crowd (usually) they get big thrills out of it. The bully could have problems at home, bottling up emotions, and feeling many different emotions at once, and they take it out on others and express themselves in anger and that's how bullying starts. Bullying is a big problem-for ALL ages, doesn't just have to be High school or Elementary school.
Hope this helps!

Because deep inside they are just chickenshi* themselves and they usually pick on the smallest guy or girl with 2 or 3 of their idiotic friends behind them too. I was taller than most at school and was bullied once and there were always 3-4 with this moron too. I came in one day and flipped my lid and I plastered all of them to the wall outside of the highschool and soon it became common knowledge that I was the guy to fear, and after that nobody ever bothered me again and since then I became a top notch Marine and fighter too. No fear and the motto on my arm reads "Who Dares Wins".

I think sometimes its because they themselves are bullied - perhaps at home by an abusive family member for example. I've read articles that suggested that such people in turn bully others as it gives them a sense of control over their lives.

Many times, the bully, is
being bullied at home or
elsewhere. Attention is
very important to them.
No getting enough at home
gives them anger that they
take out on a weak person..
I hope that BULLY is not you..
If it is, get some help...

They are generally bullied at home by their parents/guardians or siblings.
And yes, they do it to make themselves feel better, by making someone else feel worse.
In the adult world, I have always found that the biggest a**h*les, are the people who have miserable home lives.
Kinda makes me feel sorry for them. In school though, you need to learn how to protect yourself, and kick their butts if they try to hurt you first.
Offense, is always, the best defense. Good luck.

It makes them feel powerful to pick on someone they think is weak. They usually are people that feel bad about themselves in some way. When I was young and had that happen to me or someone else, I would usually say "Did that make you feel good? or Did that make you feel better about yourself?".
They would usually give me a puzzled look and walk away. They acted like they didn't get what I mean but I know they did.

They are insecure, fat, little "you know whats" and on on on. But they always turn out to be losers going nowhere in life.
