Hi,

For the past 3 years, I've been living in Ghana, Africa, where it's never below 80. In January, I'm heading to NJ for my Mom's surprise 70th Birthday Party. What do I wear? Nothing too casual or too dressy, and something I won't have to spend a fortune on, as I may not need it again afterwards.

I'm 5'10, about 140 lbs, and 46 years old. Any thoughts on what's appropriate.

Thanks.

True, as one respondent pointed out, I know what winter feels like, but what I'm looking for is, what's in style this year? I don't want people who haven't seem me in several years to say, "Oh, there's Barb, she hasn't changed a bit... still wearing those geeky turtlenecks and jeans and clogs..." I want to look like I KNOW what's in fashion, even though every day of my life now, I wear shorts and a tank and flip flops. I don't want to look like I shoudl be applying to Ultimate Makeover, you know?

I'm not worried about the outer clothes, or the casual stuff, I can borrow that. But say I go for a skirt, then should it be long or short (how short... I'm 46 remember, though I have great long legs). I don't want my 16 and 17 year old nieces to give me that "who do I think I am trying to look like a teenager" kind of look.

Hope I've clarified a bit. I want to look undorky, classic but not too Ralph Lauren.

try just a basic v-neck long-sleeved t shirt, wear a necklace with it. you could try jeans if it's a casual type of party, or the kind of wide-leg pants. I think good colors would be purple for the shirt and black for the pants (unless you wear jeans). you should wear a round-toed shoe with it, well that's my opinion because I think pointy toes are for work and the office, but pointy toes could look good with this outfit.

a military-style sort of trenchcoat because it will be cold outside!

You can wear a lovely dress - with or without sleeves or a dressy pant suit. What you wear inside is not what is so important....as you may recall, we do have heat in our homes and buildings.

You may ask your mother, siblings, or old friends still in New Jersey, if someone might have a coat you can borrow while there. Since you are more attuned to a hot climate, you may also want to borrow a few sweaters to wear while in NJ.

I realize that you have been out of the country for 3 years, but presumably at age 46 you lived here for 43 years and should have a recollection of what people wore and the weather.

Another idea - ask the people in your family for suggestions of dress as they will know more if the celebration is casual, semi-formal or dressy/formal.

NJ in January? Dress in layers.

If yo uare smart you will get a set of thermal underware. Then jeans. A T-shirt with a sweater over it. Then a heavy coat. Nice thick socks and tennis shoes or boots.

If you dress in layers you can put on for warmth before you get to NJ

Try your Sear or JC Penny's catalogs. Living in a warm place you rblood will have thinned and your body acclimated to the warmth. For your comfort and saftey dress warmly. Coming from a warm tropical limate to the harsh northern winters could really make you ill!

Pants, Long sleeve shirt. You should dress up a bit for her birthday.Geesh! Inside it should be around 67 degrees on up.

Outside you have to dress for warmth. Coat with pockets. Scarf. Mittens.

Afterwards just donate to Salvation Army, clothes you will never need again. Wash them first!
