If you have a big ego it's generally not a good thing. Self esteem is just a tiny part of it. It means you are full of yourself, basically. The dictionary definition is: The idividual as a whole in his capacity to think, feel, and act; self. However, the dictionary definitions you generally cannot understand, and it's basicaly saying that you're full of your self, put simply.

You can have confidence and self esteem without having a big ego. Too often the ego exhibited is actually a false bravado; some think that by projecting a confidence (false or not) people will believe in their abilities.

Having a good self esteem can mean that you realize you have certain limitiations and can accept that without causing yourself problems.

For example I reallize that I do not sing well---I cannot carry a tune in a bucket. But I have a good self esteem because I can accept that limitation and do well on other things. OK, I do well on most other things I do---there goes that ego again.

No, the people with the biggest egos are often those with the lowest self-esteem. Self-confidence is the certainty that you can do something well or reasonable well. Self-esteem is the sense that you have the same right to exist and be yourself as everyone else does.

I consider "ego" and "self esteem" to be two separate things. A person can have low self esteem and a big ego, or they can have high self esteem and a big ego.

Another person may have high self esteem, yet show no signs of having a big ego.

I think they're related, but different. Confidence is more internal- like feeling good about yourself the way you are- while a big ego is external- feeling like you're better than the people around you. Confidence is great, and having it lets you be more authentic, honest, and content. Having a big ego doesn't help you achieve any of those qualities.

Confidence is much more important.

I believe that if you have a big ego, then your self esteem is probably much lower than you like! I believe peope try to cover up their insecurities by wearing an ego on only one nonsense aspect of who they are! great self-esteem is very equal to being humble.... you dont need to show it off to actually have it!

Well, I answered something similar today...
long story short,
you've got a healthy ego, or confidence, or what-have-you, if you accept the good in yourself, and still admit your errors well enough to actually fix them.

It takes much more strength to be humble and seek the truth about one's self, than to refuse to be wrong and look cool.
