It's to do with the way the body circulates heat. When cold the body will first provide what heat it can to your vital organs and the extremities (hands and feet) can suffer as a result.
This process seems to work differently in men than women in that our vital organs require more heat, perhaps (and this is just a guess) designed to keep a baby warm if it is inside us.

It's good to hear it isn't just me. It drives my husband crazy when we're in the truck and he's burning up and I'm freezing. Sometimes he even has to roll the window down while the heater is on until I get warmed up, and even then my hands are usually still cold. I can tell you that in my life when I am slimmer I have more trouble being cold. He outweighs me by about 100 pounds. A co-worker of mine used to be very heavy, now she's lost over 100 pounds and says she is definitely colder now than when she was heavy. I think that unless there is a thyroid problem, it's probably just because guys tend to be heavier than us, and the bigger the guy, the hotter the furnace. Just a side note...iron is a metal and you can very easily OD on it, so you should never take supplemental iron on your own. You need to have a blood test to see where your levels are at and then have an MD monitor you while you're on it. It can be dangerous.

Ha ha, you may not believe this, but I almost took offence to this! I thought you meant that women are colder emotionally! I think it is because traditionally we do different work so that affects our metabolism and our circulation. Men cope better working outside. Plus men have more muscle and the way they store fat is different. The more active you are the warmer you should feel ... just thought of a friend who is very active, female and very skinny and always cold. I GIVE UP

It's because whoever made the human race was smart enough to know that if he made women colder, they'd try to get warmer. With any luck that might continue the species :) I mean imagine if he/she/whatever made men colder, we'd probably mostly be extinct by now :)
