Try Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything." No need for God, just a nice compendium of one man's exploration of creation, from the minute to the universal.

It's different for everyone... I assume you mean believeing in people as in role model etc - I see no point in makin up Gods just cuz other people have them!
