I lost my job 4 weeks ago but have so far managed to keep myself afloat by wagering pool and hustling cards in the pub. My rent and bills for month are paid, I'm spending most the day in the pub enjoying myself and none of my income is taxed. Wot motivation do I have in getting a job?
Is "pub-goer" not a legit profession?

billy - I used to run a pub, thats where i learnt my pool and cards. Lost my license last december though for generally being a (ex) drunk and not being a responsible landlord so thats that out the window, but good thinking

a self employed gambler, you get tax relief on pub grub, not on beer.... been doing the same sort of thing for 8 years, the house gets paid, kids get well looked after, i eat well, people get jealous when your sat out side the boozer at lunchtime and them poor sods have to go back to another 4 hours graft

if you are such a good pub goer why don't you think about running your own pub?
You could put your pool and card skills to good use entertaining the regulars and you get to live life how you want to.
That way when you start getting too old for pool and card hustling you have something to fall back on

pub-goer is not a profession. Besides, if you don't pay taxes, you won't be able to get social security when you get old. Also, you probably need heath insurance and life insurance and most jobs offer benefits such as those.

I will not dignify that with an answer. But just in case you are actually wondering, no, no it isn't.

There is also the girls issue. I don't think a stale whiskey smelling professional pub-goer would look too attractive to girls. Unless they are in the same or a similar business. Then you must think if YOU would find such a girl attractive.

You will eventually need more money, plus you might meet some new mates to go to the pub with if you get a new job!

As well as rousing the interest of the Inland Revenue for your earnings, you are also claiming benefits. This means that, not only are you not declaring your income to IR, but you are also defrauding the benefits office.
Nice work until they catch you out.

'cause its legit. Earning a few quid and not hurting anyone - what's wrong with that? Go for it mate. Stuff the moral argument - if I could afford to join you I would. Good luck and good hustling!

the hustling will not last long, get a real job, and do the hustling part time. Plus with a real job you can get a retirement plan
