Many of the links given by other answerers were good links to look at some of the simpler and less expensive traditional weddings dresses.
The first thing to decide before buying a dress, though, it whether you are more interested in buying a dress for the design, or buying a dress that will compliment your body type. Or both. Once you decide what kind of bodice (empire cut, strapless, off-the-shoulder, etc.) and what kind of skirt (a-line, ballroom, etc.) you want, you'll be able to narrow down the millions of dresses out there to find one you'll appreciate and love.

There are so many beautiful dresses, it is really hard to find the "perfect" one, so try to find one that you will love. I searched with my mom and a bridesmaid and compared their reactions to my feelings to find the perfect dress. I love my dress.... and I could not have found it without them.
Before I went dress shopping in person, I narrowed down my ideas using the internet. theknot.com is awesome. Spend a few days just looking at everything and imagine your wedding day and how you want to look and feel that day. Good luck!

Make sure when you go to find that perfect dress that you don't just admire. Move around in it, unless you intend to change clothes for the reception.
I just watched a bride spend all of her reception pulling her strapless gown back up over her boobs. It so spoiled the elegance of the bride.

something understated & classic - it will then look timeless
simple lines with or without a train.
often times ""LESS IS MORE""
make sure the style suits your personality.
go to some bridal stores & try on various styles.
as so many dresses today seem to be strapless ; then maybe look at something with a full shoulder to be different.

How about a white (or cream) colored dress. Kind of hard to explain. Here are some pictures to look at
