Also, do these CCAs favour students who have background in a particular instrument? Is it easier to learn the cello or a chinese orchestra instrument, say the erhu?

Of course if you have a music background it'll be to your advantage. Personally, i do not like Chinese orchestra but it's up to you cuz you have to put some thoughts into what you like better, be it for a short period of 2 years. Also, look at e number of awards of ACJC C.O and S.E, which provides u with more benefits and opportunities? Think about it=)

if i were you, i will take c.o. Im in co now.. Im playing the cello.. Took me a short time to be familiar with the cello..
Hmm.. for the other instrument like the erhu, ruan, yangqin & flute, i think that people expect alot from those groups. Cello is being drowned into other instruments.. ( but it depends on the song)
Anyway, if you take up cello in co, & you realised you dont like co, you can go over to strings.. lol

Chinese Orchestra is better. Too many people can play western instruments. Chinese instruments are refreshing.

i've seen people play chinese instruments and it looks so easy. i play the violin in high school orchestra and i practice so hard even though i have the easiest part (2nd/3rd violin) and it's still hard! i woould love to play the cello. i know how to read the notes already because i play the piano, but i suck at reading bass, and my hands are kind of small/weak.
