Religion has caused allot of evil, but let me ask you, if one day you picked up some spinach that made you really sick, would try to find out why it made you sick and be more careful next time, would you swear off all vegetables, or just swear off spinach?
A sensible person would try to find out what was wrong with the spinach, if the problem was fixable they would be more careful next time. If it wasn't fixable they would still eat vegetables, but just not eat any more spinach. It would be extremely unhealthy to swear off all veggies.

There are at least as many religions out there as their are vegetables, and each even the good ones can have ones that have gone bad.
. And some religions are allot better then others.

Look around the net for different hospital names, a huge portion of them are named after Christian Saints, because they were founded in that person's honor.
Most of our oldest and most honorable universities were were Christian in the beginning, even though this started changing sometime in the 1900's.
Organizations like the Salvation Army and the Red Cross were also founded on Christian Principles.

It was by a Christian named William Wilberforce the slavery was abolished in England. The list of people who have accomplished great things in the name of Christ goes on and on.

All religions have bad apples that only CLAIM to follow that faith, so please don't judge any religion, including mine, solely based on the people who claim to follow it. Judge them according to the holy book of each faith and your reflections on the world, if the faith says were all just a dream that God is having, but you see the world as real then that faith should be discarded. If the faith says that sending someone who is clearly mentally ill for medical care is wrong, then you should discard that faith.

Any good researcher follows one main rule GO TO THE SOURCE. And this Is what you should do when judging an individual religion. Otherwise you are doing the equivalent of looking at someone in prison that is of a color not your own, and then declaring that all people of that color are bad.

Very little of the world's evil can be directly attributed to religion. Suggesting that Muslim extremism is today's greatest cause of evil is simply untrue - the recent civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing 3 million, greatly outweighs the deaths in Iraq, Afghanistan and 9/11 combined. Secondly, would you not agree that the unjust trade system, which allows millions to live in poverty is more to do with economics, selfishness on behalf of the West, and lack of care? Although the media is full of the West-Islam divide, how much of your personal suffering is down to religion? Even for people who were abused by people with religious authority, is that not more the individual evil of the person than the crimes commited by a religion as a whole? Is not the current war in Iraq far more complex than a simply ideological conflict? Is the nuclear weapons testing in North Korea more to do with the desire for power innate to human beings?

And do not religious movements create a massive amount of good? Were not several Christian individuals instrumental in the abolition of slavery in the US and UK? Did Gordon Brown not praise the church for its relentless efforts to try and end world poverty? Did not the church have a massive influence on the reconciliation process in South Africa?

Yes, simply because the "undeniable" good of a religion has never been exclusive to them and they are merely taking credit for it.

However, the evil it created is very real and can be attributed solely to religion

Nope, the molecular density of good outweighs evil at a rate of fifteen to one thus creating an imbalance in this form of measurement that even religion can't screw up!

Religion is a concept of faith---it is not a thing. Satan is the father of evil and men are his puppets. Do not blame religion for the ills of the ---blame men.

yeah maybe. But the real question for me would be has religion created more havoc than its worth in MY life.
and once again I would say yes, but spirituality on the other hand has been a very positive force for me.

I could explain that better to you one on one than here in a public forum.

Yes, unfortunately there are many evil religions in the world. But Jesus predicted they will outweigh the good ones. He said of the end times, "Those that kill you will think they are doing service to God." But we don't live for this world. We live for the promise of our reward to come.

Depends on WHICH religion one is referring to and precisely WHAT their definition of "evil" is.
