you can start dreads at just about any length, but they will take a bit more looking after while they settle in if your hair is shorter as it's a little easier for them to come 'undone' . Having said that if you wait too long it will take ages to get them to take and you might end up with uneven ones if it starts to dread itself, depends on what you are looking for in youre dreads really!
I would recommend something called dreadwax from knotty boy as it keeps them separate and locks them in really well, pretty much any wax will do but this smells great and is especially designed for dreads so it doesn't come out very easily and isn't sticky so doesn't make them stick together

when you do start them, you need to roll them between your hands/fingers every day (again a good reason to do them short) so they don't unravel, it's a good habit to get into too as it keeps them neat if you always do it

as they get longer they will naturally straighten out at the weight will combate any curls in the dreads, rolling them will also help keep them straight

hope that helps!

Honestly, for caucasion hair, it's easier to have all one length hair to start with. I have personally started a few people, caucasion, with dreadlocks (what a process, OMG! LOL) The caucasion hair's a pain in the butt as it doesn't want to "lock up", and when I've done this on a girl with light blonde (naturally) hair which was layered, I wanted to shoot myself, frankly. I was fighting against the hair's nature, and dealing with these little fuzzy ends that were poking up all over each individual dread, trying in vain to get it to blend into the lock. When I did this same process on a few girls with very straight (well, one had some slight natural wave, which helped...) hair that was all one length, it was a TON easier and took a TON less time. Either way, remember, wax is your friend. Your best friend, while trying to dread caucasion hair!!!

The curlier the hair, the better, the twists will hold better. As for your hair being to short thats not true, look at Beenie Man, have you ever seen his "Who am I?" video? His locks are very short and now Beenie's hair is long long past his sholders and its thick and looks very nice and that video was done back in '98 or so. Good luck with your hair and make sure you get someone/hairdresser that can twist it good in the first place!

3 inches is fine to start turning your hair in to dread locks, all you need is a couple of inches of hair to start twisting it, go to Afro Caribbean hair dressers and they will twist all the hair to the thickness that you want it then every 4 - 6 weeks just get someone who can help you twist the roots, Good luck, oh yeah make sure its something you want because if you don't want them anymore you will have no choice but to shave your hair off.....

Wait until its at least a couple of inches longer. The curls wont effect the dreads, so dont worry about that.

Just wait till its longer tho - when you dread hair, it goes shorter

short as this is alot easier to maintain. This because you have started to lox your hair from the roots and as your hair grows you can maintain it a lot easier. Starting something from the beginning is always better than taking the easier root.

Usually, which too long for me. I believe it depends on the guy and also his face though. Certain guys may pull off long hair and others can't.
