I don't think Santa Claus is so much of a "religious figure" as he is a portrayal of all the good things associated with Christmas - giving, sharing, peace on earth, goodwill towards men, that sort of thing.

He's a false idol and his name contains the letters of "satan," simply disguised and rearranged. People who promote him to children are not very bright to say the least, in my humble opinion.
