Other than Quicksilver the rest of you don't have a clue what you are talking about, even the martial artists amongst you !
Kickboxing is derived from Karate,it is a very different sport from Muay Thai.
Those of you doing Muay Thai in any country other than Thai Land (and perhaps Sweden) are not involved in traditional full on Muay Thai anyway because it is simply not as aggresive or full blooded as traditional Muay Thai, i.e. you do not fight to the death any more !
You can not compare the two, it is like comparing football and rugby, they are totally different sports and so any comparison is irrelevant.

hey there most of this has already bin said but anyway, thai boxing is an ancient art (muay thai) which became a sport and in doing so lost some of the other areas such as krabi kabong which invoplved the use of weapons and ground fighting.

The sport allows kicking below the waist (unlike kick boxing), punches, elbows, knees and cathc n counters. In additton to this the fighters kick using more of their shin rather than foot as this allows for more solid strikes (although it has been cliamed by some that this is at the loss of speed) and has kicks using more hip rotation than snaping of the leg. If u no what i mean!!

I think its also been said that kick boxing is kinda derived from full contact karate which was then put into weight categories & regulated

Muay Thai has fewer rules (because it's bare bones no frills fighting) than American (or should I say WESTERN) Kickboxing, and is usually not about garnering points during the fight, but as to which fighter has the stamina to win the fight.

Both CAN make use of the elbows and knees in their matches, but in Muay Thai, it's more prevalent to use the elbows and knees especially in the close quarters aspect of the sport.

Whereas in Western Kickboxing allows limited use of the elbows and knees because it's more toned down to lessen the injuries to the competitors.

American Kickboxing is a watered down version of Muay Thai.
For instance using elbows, knees or shins is not allowed in US kickboxing it is in Muay Thai.

Kickboxing is a watered down martial art, they have different rules. Which i feel is less contact that Muay Thai.

They also tend to do many flashy kicks, and nice shiney trousers lol! Whereas Muay Thai is very traditional and is more lets just get down to it.

Also Muay Thai has been around for over 3000 years, whereas Kickboxing is quite recent.

I am a Muay Thai boxer, and at our gym we have a Kick Boxer turned Muay Thai boxer, and he is a very good kicker which i feel he achieved from Kick boxing. However, his shins are not as conditioned as they dont tend to do full contact in Kick Boxing.

Whoa! Easy, turbo! I have news for you- 1). You have no clue how I train; 2) you have no clue who I train with; 3) "Sport" Muay Thai is what's practiced in Thailand, and they don't fight "to the death". Lay off the Jean-Claude van Damme flicks...

Mark W I do kickboxing and we use elbows and knees too.

I would say that muay thai is a bit more brutal in its style and includes more grappling whilst kickboxing is more like modern day boxing with some hefty kicks thrown in.

One has more restrictions than the other. Kick boxing uses only hands and feet, while muay thai uses hands , feet, elbows, knees, some even allow head, but thats full contact.

Muay Thai allows strikes using the elbows and knees as well as hands and feet.
