The term 'powerful' is speculative, because it rests on relative terms. Cortez's army, when he traveled to Mexico, was average for a European power, but devastating when compared to the isolated Aztec civilization. Likewise the U.S. Army when compared to the Native American tribes. Also, no army remains 'powerful' for very long, simply because a powerful army creates a situation where other countries compensate: either by powering up their armies, or by signing treaties with other countries. Hitler's army, due to its rapid deployment and coordinated offense, for a time was the most powerful army in the world, until the United States, Great Britian, and the rest of Europe decided to form an alliance against it. To be honest, the most powerful army ever is one that is ideological in nature. Ideas can't be killed or conquered, they endure.

If you are talking most powerful army ever I would vote for Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire. They had control over more land than any other empire in history. The impact that they had on both Eastern and Western culture is immense.
Its a shame that they dont get more recognition for this fact because they have in fact a very unique and interesting history.

With todays technology, it has to be the USA. Fortunately USA does not take over other countries permanently. The Roman empire extended over a large mass of Europe, but there were several others that were just as fearsome. None had the firepower, or weapons that would destroy most of the world. They still used spears and knives.
There is a large fear today, because the Muslims want to take over the world, and don't care if they die doing it. You are going to see some mass destrution in your lifetime for sure.

Right now the most powerful army is the US military. In ancient times it was the Romans. Inthe 1200's it was the Mongols. In 1930's-40's it was Nazi Germany. In the early 1800's it was France because of Napoleon. In 336BC-323BC it was the Macedonians because of Alexander The Great (Who to me is not so great).
