If your budget includes both Macs and PC's, then it's up to you to look at all the packages, try out the different operating systems, and get a feel for what you prefer. But I really don't think the Mac is superior just because it's a Mac. I have never found them to be any faster, and I think their operating system looks like it was designed for a child, but that's just my opinion.
As someone else pointed out, a lot of it has to do with the fact that Macs are always very expensive- Apple don't make cheaper ones because they want to protect their brand image. And they don't keep selling their older models- the only ones you can buy are very up to date. They do make a lot of cheap PC's though- the new and expensive ones are just as good as the new and expensive Macs, but people just don't always go for those when faced with a much cheaper option that has all the same superficial features.
If this is the only computer you will be exposed to then it doesn't much matter, but if you use PC's at work I would really recommend you get one for home as well. I sometimes borrow my flatmate's Mac, after a day at work using a PC, and it's really annoying because everything is a bit different and it goes against what I'm used to. For example I'm always going to press the "delete" button but it's not there, they only have a backspace. If you use computers a lot it becomes very instinctive, you don't have to think about what you're doing- so don't confuse yourself by having different systems for work and home, it will slow YOU down regardless of the computer's speed!

I use both platforms everyday. Neither one is faster than the other, but both have their specific benefits. Yes mac some some very small laptops but the smallest is 13 inch (mac Book)
Macs are definitely more user friendly (My opinion), especially if you have never used a computer before. It is true they get very few viruses and software updating is simple. They also come with lots of Free useful software. Working with graphics, photos or video production is a Mac mus
t. PC's are cheaper, more universal, easier to buy software for at least in the area I live in (northern NY) They are more prone to viruses but with a virus protection software program you are relatively protected.
My suggestion:find out which one you like more and then buy that one. Each has their benefits and each has their problems.

Come on, it all depends on what you buy. My Palm Pilot is faster than an Apple IIe (circa 1980's), but not a brand new Mac Powerbook. There is nothing about Macs or PCs that makes one inherently slower than the other... in the computing world you pay for speed. A $1,000 Mac is probably about as fast as a $1,000 PC.

See resources below for some various opinions. You should read between the lines in any review, because in every review that I have ever read, the author has some spin towards pc or mac.

the older MAC were always faster then PCs, cause they used RISC processors, where as the new MACs use Intel chips which may explain why the PCs are now seeming faster then MACs.

macs have so many benefits - including people don't really write viruses for them so they're alot safer. They're certainly not slower than pcs - mine is alot faster.
