i am taking a Criminology course about Terrorism at a Canadian University, and i was wondering what do most people think about this question...

By the Irish i am referring to the IRA which carried out terrorist bombings across England, in order for Northern Ireland to become independent (they were Catholic)

and the Hamas (Muslims) which is doing the same acts in Israel so that Palestine would be free

Why is one group referred to by its religion, and the other wasn’t??

PLEZ do not say “Islam preaches hate” with out citing me the verse from the Quran!

Simple...because they are fighting ISLAM...not Terror.
USA is the biggest terrorist and no body fighting it,and The so-called "israel"as well,.
They are fighting humanity and virtue in ISLAM...AND all the wrong doings that comes from some muslims is because of their anger against unjustice towards muslims and islam...IT IS A REACTION & REVENGE to the west"s acts against them.

Moe, you ask a serious question, and so far, no one has given you a complete, serious and credible answer. Please, let me try.

The reason for the distinction is because of the ends of each group. While the IRA was made up of many who were raised Catholic, the ends of the IRA were expressly secular in nature. They wanted an end to British Rule in Northern Ireland, eventual union with the Republic in the south, and a socialist government.
Since their agenda was not religious, there was no justification for calling them "Catholic bombers."

On the other hand, groups like Al Qaeda, Hamas and Hezbollah are all organizations with an avowed "Islamist" agenda. By their own admissions these are groups who believe in a theocratic organization of society along the lines of Quranic law; and therefore they are sometimes designated as "Islamic extremists."

I hope this answers your question.

Oh please. First off, my Granddad was Pashtun from Afghanistan so i take offense to the way that you try and imply that Afghans are terrorists. I am from England and the only Islamic terrorist attack which has ever been commited here was commited by 4 people-3 of which were of PAKISTANI heritage. Most terrorist plots in England are connected to Pakistan or British Pakistanis so there ARE terrorists in your country mate, whether you want to admit it or not. I personally don't think that any nation of people should be stereotyped as 'terrorists' but Pakistanis have no room to talk about Afghans and Arabs when they have lots of terrorist plots linked to their country as well. Don't complain about negative stereotypes about your country and then go on to stereotype other countries as being terrorists.

Here is my take on this ... my opinion only. In the case of Ireland the Church itself was not being used to fund or further terrorism.

In the case of Islam, it is not Muslims that are the "bad guys" it is a group of thugs and corrupt religious figures that are using the church to hide behind in spreading, funding, and teaching terrorism to people.

Is Arab countries the church ... mosque ... is the center of life. The corrupt Arab leaders know this, and they have so much money that they can buy the allegience of the religous leaders who then use strict Islamic law called Sharia to repress freedom of thought and speech in Muslims lands.

Because there is so much money behind these Arab leaders due to the oil exporting business, they can send money all over the world and teach their brand of Islam in America, Canada, and other lands that are not even Muslim.

It is this machine that is inside Arab Islam that makes it so dangerous, and in my opinion must be stopped. It teaches Arab and Muslims children to hate Americans, Westerners and Jews before they ever have a chance to think for themselves.

It is evil. In Ireland it was just the terrorists that were evil. See the movie Michael Collins for a superficial story about this.

Not only Islam but any religion preaches hate!
In history you can see many crimes to satisfied religion.
Media refers the Arabs as Muslim terrorists because they want to say that Muslims Arabs are something different that we are!
Good and bad, white and black persons in the past, free democratic countries and bad communists at 60s-80s ,
and now good christian and bad Muslim, its simple!

Because one group is motivated by religous zeal whereas the other is not. A Muslim terrorist does what he does out of his zeal for Islam. A member of the IRA, which is currently in a cease-fire mind you, while Catholic are motivated for political reasons.

The fighting in Ireland was not over Catholics and non Catholics but over a free Ireland, free of British rule. The IRA was not yelling bless be the Catholics God as they killed them self. The IRA only goal was to get the Brits out.

The media did make the connection at the time, check out news clips from the early 1970's . here is a fact that none can deny: Catholic holy books don't tell it's followers to kill off all other religions. Can this be said for the Muslims Book.

The press I read calls people who commit terrorism in the name
of Islam(Muslims) Islamic extremist and the IRA wasn't bombing in the name of catholics but for a united Ireland..

99% of Arabs are Muslim and though most Irish are catholic there is quiet a high percentage of other religions as well so it would be quiet wrong to refer to them as catholic terrorists indeed there religion plays little or no part in their lives.

First of all, there is no such place as Palestine.

If the IRA would shout Allahu Akbar before performing their acts of terror, the we could label them according to their religion. The Islamic terrorist commit their terror against Israel as an expression of their religious fervor. Their jihad or holy war is an Islamic concept.
