This is an odd question. According to Christian theology, the Saviour can only be so if he dies and then is resurrected--in order to save the world. If Barabbas had not been spared and instead Jesus was allowed to live, then he could not have fulfilled his mission as Saviour. Therefore, all those events leading up to that day, and all the events on that day and thereafter would all have been in accordance with that mission. All the people involved: The High Priests, The Mob, Pilate, Barabbas, Jesus himself, all contributed to the fulfilling of that mission. Theologically speaking then, what appears to have been an act of hate by the mob was a way of ensuring an act of love in the form of The Resurrection willed by a Divine Plan as perceived by those who practice the Christian faith.

They chose Barabbas because the Jews did not recognize Jesus as being the son of God. So to satisfy the Jewish tradition of Passover they chose to set Barabbas free instead. They stated that since Jesus claimed to be a King then he was defying Ceasar. Caiphas and Annus told Pilate if he set him free he would be defying Ceasar as well and would be commiting High Treason to the crown of Ceasar. The crowd chose barabbas also for the fact they didnt want to meet the same fate as Jesus.
As to those who claim they are a king, so goes the same fate to those who worship in the fellowship with said King. they worshiped him and when the going got rough, His followers got running and He was even sold out by his own. Keep Him in your heart always and he will show the way to a place where death does not exist. Of all the famous people in the world, I want to live like a King. Hope this answers your question.

The "mob" chose because the Pharisees and ruling officials made up the "mob". There were no regular off-the-street Jews in the crowd.
The Pharisees hate Yeshua so much because he taught that people should return to God's holy Torah and leave the foul, traditional laws of the Pharisees. The Pharisees believed they had a God-given right to oversee the lives of Jews, but Yeshua spoke against them (ref Matt 24) because by living according to their traditions they had forsaken the commandments of God (ie Torah) (ref Matt 15:3, Mark 7:8-9).
The reason why the Pharisees chose Barabbas over Yeshua is because Barabbas didn't incite people to forsake the authority of the Pharisees and return to Torah, he simply robbed Roman convoys. In the eyes of the Pharisees, Barabbas was a simple thief against Romans while Yeshua incited treason against the Jewish government - a harsher crime in their eyes.

This whole situation was already preordained that it would happen. Whilst the other answers give a good background as to the real situation the release of Barabbas was very significant as it shows how the Innocent sets the guilty free which was exactly what Jesus did for us as he took our punishment upon himself so that we could be set free exactly as was the situation with Barabbas. Under Roman law no matter what ever Barabbas did after his release he could never again be brought to trial and condemned. When Jesus sets us free we can never again come into condemnation as he has paid the price for our sins past, present and future and this is why we can apply Romans Ch.8 V1 to ourselves "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus"

Because the evil Pharisees and chief priests incited them to. They hated Jesus because He had exposed them for the hypocritical phonies that they were. At that point when Jesus pointed out their sins, they had a choice to make just like we all did when we heard the good news. And like most people will, they chose not to repent. That's why they hated him. Because they knew He was right and they didn't want to change and they were afraid that if the people believed Him, they would be overthrown and the country would be totally annihilate by the Romans.

Human beings were threatened by His doctrine and human thought hates the truth, because the truth breaks down human views and misconceptions. The darkness does not comprehend light, so the choice was what made sinners more comfortable.

There was a prophesy that "his own people would reject him" and thats just what the Jews did. They didn't believe he was a saviour. They thought he was a possed heritic. Demon or Barrabas and they chose the lesser of two evils(in their minds)
