It is true that Old Testament believers lived before Jesus' actual historical sacrifice, yet the Bible suggests that they experienced acceptance and fellowship with God on the basis of their faith in what God had revealed of Himself and His ways. Genesis 15:6 says concerning Abraham: "Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness."
The Old Testament makes clear that God taught the people to approach Him by way of animal sacrifices. The Mosaic law required that animals be offered as sacrifices and that the priests sprinkle the blood upon the designated altar. Those sacrifices foreshadowed and symbolized the anticipated shedding of blood and sacrificial death of Jesus, the Messiah. Christ's eventual sacrifice of His own life as the "lamb without blemish" was the fulfillment of the sacrificial offerings to atone for sin. The Old Testament book of Leviticus and the New Testament book of Hebrews provide an excellent harmony of truth on this subject. Both Old Testament believers and New Testament believers were saved by grace through faith on the basis of the shed blood of Jesus Christ. The Old Testament looked forward to the sacrifice of Christ, while the New Testament looks back on that same sacrifice.
Throughout the history of this world, countless people have discovered that God alone, through Jesus Christ, can meet the deepest longings and needs of the human heart. This is possible because Jesus was fully God and fully man. He died to pay the death penalty for our sin, and He was raised from the dead by the power of God. He is alive today, and He wants to be in your life right now. We encourage you to commit your life to Christ. It is the most important step you will ever take.

I'm curious how a lot of Christians will answer this.....
My own answer is that then, as now, they didn't "do" anything. Everybody goes there. Heaven is a state of mind which anyone can (and everyone ultimately will) choose to have.

They followed the same message Jesus (PBUH) brought: the worship of one God (Allah).
It says in the Bible:
2 SAMUEL 7:22 — Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God; for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
PSALM 18:31 — For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God?
ISAIAH 43:10,11 — Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no savior.
There are MANY more instances inteh bible where it is obvious that God ALONE should be worshipped. It is the message ALL the prophets brought.

Before Jesus, ancient people obey the God`s commandment, obey their leaders and the prophets (who talks to God directly and received/channel what God wants to tell to His people.
Since you`re born now, after Jesus birth, His mission/preaching, His sacrifice, His death, His resurrection and His going back to the Father.....so, you better believe in Him because He shows the perfect way to be back to the Almighty Father. If you don`t want to follow him, sorry, there is no other way...but getting lost...to hell
Hasta la vista, amigo !!!

There is a Scripture regarding Moses....
It goes this way......
Romans 4:2-4
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
Everyone killed animals for the covering of sin....... but, unto Abraham.... He believed.....
Faith is very important to salvation.......

Those people who follow their prophet at their time will go to paradise.
The True Founder of Christianity
The teachings of Paul, the true founder of Christianity, cannot be found anywhere in the teachings of Jesus or in those of prophets before him.

I would imagine that they followed the Jewish faith, as Judiasm was the prevailing religion before Christianity came in and took over.
