My dvd player has all of a sudden stopped reading discs. When I put a dvd in it scans it for a minute & then the door just opens. If it does eventually pick up a disc it will play for a few minutes & then freeze. Is the machine just broken & I need it serviced or is there something I'm missing out on? As a btw the player is about a year old.

I've had that happen. Usually it's when the DVD in the player has been burned by a friend and given to me. The DVD player doesn't have whatever it needs to be able to read a burned DVD. Although there are different formats even for commercial DVD's and they're not all recognizable by all DVD's. Then there's the issue of a DVD being from another country and your DVD player not being able to read the other country's format.

Mine did that. It just happened to do it the day my bloke broke up with me and I wanted to do a Bridget Jones and hide under the duvet for a year. I only paid £30 for it and had more than a year of solid use from it so I bought a new one from Tesco for £17. It works brilliantly and it's tiny. Sometimes they're just not worth servicing.
