I am a Calzaghe fan but am getting bored with his level of opponents. Lacy was a great win for him and he should now be looking to unify the division. Instead it looks like he will be fighting Manfredo Jr in March. Manfredo is ranked no8 by the WBO, so why does he get a shot above higher ranked fighters. I still say Calzaghe is the best super middleweight out ther but fighting people who is not in his league does him no favours. The IBF will be stripping him of his title which makes the Lacy fight worthless. I thought every boxers dream is to be a champion but there are too many fighters looking for the easy route and it is getting boring. What happened to pride in boxing. Sadly it is a corrupt sport that is all about the money.

Except for Lacy who else has he really fought except for an old Eubank. How about Kessler or Jackson, no cause he is running scared. As for having eyes shut at ringside, anyone can look good fighting bums.

For a long time Calzaghe was in the position of being too good for any of the top dogs to risk defending their WBC/WBA/IBF titles against him. I think he's just got complacement and is taking what is given to him instead of rising or dropping in weight and making any noise about other fighters who could advance his career.

I agree with you...I don't think there's a better fighter at 168 Lbs

I think that if Calzaghe was given the chance to unify the titles with a fight against Kessler he would jump at the chance as would he if he was offered a fight against Taylor or Winky Wright. Its just that hes not getting the chance at the moment and is just filling time untill it hopefully happens. I agree with you that Manfredo jr with a no 8 ranking isent worthy of a title fight and he definately has been hand picked, but more so because he is a very recognised name due to being on the contender than anything else. I agree with ianot 1 that Calzaghe should fight out of Wales and im begining to wonder if thats his real problem not so much that hes afraid of fighting the big names but that hes afraid of fighting outside of Wales. Alright he did fight Mario Veit in Germany but he had a previous victory over him, a 1st rouned KO so probably didn't see it as much of a threat. Times running out for him a bit now, he will be 35 when he fights Manfredo and is very prone to hand injurys and stuff like that, lets hope the big fights that we want to see happen soon.

I gave up on boxing years ago.

The whole sport is corrupt as you say but there are also many other issues which just annoy the hell out of me.

For example, the whole sport seems like a closed shop where all the big fight have one of four promotors, you can't get away from people like Bearn Hearn and Don King.

The unwillingness of anyone who is involved to unify the belts once and for all seems rediculous, the average man on the street finds the whole thing so confusing that a world champions belt is devalued and meaningless..
It's like football having 3 world cups.

I'm not an expert on Calzaghe because of the interest i've lost in boxing which is almost complete, and this is from someone who used to watch people like Nigel Benn and Eubank live.

It needs a major shake up, 1 governing body, 1 belt for each weight and to throw out some of the faces who have been around too long.

Joe might be trying to get some "state side exposure" (sanjoman15)...but with a guy like Manfredo who is well known to the boxing world both sides of the pond why not do the job over in the states for the exposure over there......prime time?! Joe has the beating of Manfredo with his eyes shut either home or away and so I feel by taking the fight(which lets be honest is an "easy" fight for him) again in Wales is taking the easy route to some extent. Sadly i believe it is because he/Frank Warren will make more money for selling out the milenium stadium than they will for a trip over the water. But for once I would love to see him step out of his/frank's comfort zone and go over to the U.S to show the bigger audience what we know he is capable of.

Good shout!

The trouble with boxing is all the messy politics involved. There seems to be lots of very shady people behind the scenes who only want to use the sport as a cash cow to line their own pockets.

And it's the boxers and the general public who suffer at the end of the day. I don't even know if the fighters get a choice who is their next opponent or whether their next fight is chosen for them or not.

Either way Calzaghe is 35 and needs to get the big fights soon before it is too late.
