Ruby unfortunately the melanocytes that produce melanin are completely hereditary. They can not be changed. There are many, many alleles that make up a person's skin color which is why we all vary so much. Self tanners work with the top layers of skin cells, which are mostly dead cells, and can make you darker if only temporary. Dermatologists can bleach someones skin, but I urge you not to do this. On the same note, skin lighteners that you can buy over the Internet often times contain deadly amounts of lead. Vitiligo is when sections of skin will turn white or loose pigment. UV treatments from the dermatologist can help reduce this. Sometimes they use skin grafts. All in all none of these really look natural. I say be happy with your skin, I bet your beautiful. I'm covered head to toe in freckles and I'm happy with them.

hydroquinone is probably your best bet. besides that, there are some other chemical and natural options. according to Paula Begoun, the cosmetic myth-busting queen, "There is also a small amount of research showing oral supplements of pomegranate extract, ellagic acid, vitamin E, and ferulic acid can inhibit melanin production. All of these options are worth considering and experimenting with. However, compared to the extensive research concerning hydroquinone's effect on inhibiting melanin production, these alternatives may very well disappoint, but their natural allure is hard for consumers to ignore."
Arbutin, Retin-A, azelaic acid and alpha hydroxy acids may also help.
the #1 way to control melanin production? every day (EVERY DAY), 20 minutes before going outside or coming into contact with the Sun (even through windows), apply a broad-spectrum, at least SPF 15 sunscreen liberally over all exposed areas of your skin. UVA-screens approved by the FDA are: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, Avobenzone and, more recently, Mexoryl. make sure at least one of those is in the list of active ingredients.
in short. sunscreen is the best way to prevent any further skin darkening. besides that, i'd recommend topical hydroquinone and a vitamin E and pomegranate extract supplement. i've heard omega-3 fatty acid and vitamin C supplements also help build up your skin's natural SPF. those are also worth a try.
