Definitely not enough difference to travel 3000 miles, then drive the car back 3000 miles. But look at prices in: craigslist.org for each location.

There's little regional difference in prices. The diff in pollution control gear is only a couple hundred $$$ these days.

Some models are in lower demand in some areas -- a Saab will cost less in Joplin, MO than Boston for example though that's mostly due to the fact that there are no Saab dealers in the Joplin area. Or a work-horse pickup may bring more $$$ in Dallas than New York City mainly due to demand.

Some older vehicles may bring a higher price in less rust-prone areas such as So Cal than in a rust-belt state simply because they may be in better condition due to environmental factors.

Most of the time it's not worth the cost of travel for inspection and to transport the vehicle cross country. There may be the odd exception to that rule, you'll have to shop around to find out.

Yeah the pollution regulations add up the crap they have to put on a vehicle, and they have more Pollution tax on a vehicle also, and the cost of livinig has always been higher on the west coast.
