Stay at home. Invite everyone you know to come and join you (and do it now before they make plans). Get some food together, and some booze, but tell people to bring some of both, as you may end up alcoholically in profit!!
Make sure there are enough people to spill out of your main room. There are always some who like to lurk in the kitchen. Have some music on, but not drowning anything out.
Everyone will come, they will love your party and so will you. Try to have LOTS of black bags handy, even on the night (some people are compulsive tidyers and will do half your after party work for you). Everyone will be speaking about your party for years to come, and vow never to spend their hard-earned cash on going out for new year ever again.

Hogmanay in Edinburgh. Wonderful experience spent amongst thousands of people from all over the world.
You would need to book now if you decide to go as accommodation that time of year is always at a premium.
Failing that why not another country like Barcelona, Amsterdam...there is a parallel universe outside of the UK.

Too true, very over reated but I like to spend a quiet night in with drinks with friends. Seems boring to some but I refuse to pay all the money people pay for entry to clubs/pubs etc. Rather do something more worthwhile with my money.

Stay at home with friends and family, turn the TV on at 11.55 to get the countdown to midnight, then let off some fireworks and have a barbecue!
