Criminentally!
I never heard of this.
I have never tried to cook the green beans in the mike so I can't tell you if it happened to me but it does sound odd. I have cooked almost everything else in there with no trouble.
EDIT:
Thanks to your question I learned something tonight. Go to http://health.mweb.co.za/dietnfood/Food_journey/15-2052-2949.asp
It tells us that broccoli loses 97% of the antioxidants in the mike. and that the green beans spark because dense vegetables such as green beans, carrots, and green peppers have higher amounts of minerals than other food items. The minerals act like tiny pieces of metal and can create arcing effects in a microwave.

i think there might be something wrong with your microwave because i put green beans and other assorted canned and frozen food in the microwave all the time and no sparks. just be sure that the bowl doesn't have any metal in it.

You beans might have some metal in them. Metal in a microwave will make sparks. Try putting a cdr in the nucker for just a few seconds looks real cool and the cd is even better

Man I was about your age when I found this out myself.
Don't put dishes with a gold metal ring in the microwave.
Make sure that you keep all silverware out of the microwave.

Check the bowl. Does it have a metal rim or a decorative pattern in silver or gold? I hope the bowl is not stainless steel or aluminium because you have made a microwave boo-boo!!
