BSL is a flawed concept from the moment it is conceived. In most cases the dogs are targeted leaving the owner, which is the responsible, rational thinking party, out of it.

Some impose fines along with their laws but are often not enforced to the maximum so the owner gets away with a slap on the wrist.
Dogs are not the problem and BSL does not reconize this. People are the problem and until we find a way to punish people for their neglectful actions which allow dogs to bite and terrorize the public we will never stop the problem.

First problem is, take one breed away, these people will find another breed to replace it.

Since the APBT bans the Rottweiler is now on the rise as the most popular breed.

Now these dogs are taking heat from the general public and the BSL supporters. Again they are restricting the dogs and not the people.
BSL can be compared to gender profiling or racial profiling. Simply because a dog appears to be a dog on the restricted list it is treated as one.

What if you were driving down the road and the police took you to jail, sentenced you, and placed you on death row just for looking like a certain ethnic group? BSL does exactly that to dogs.

So why is it then that more BSL laws are implemented daily? God forbid a person have to take responsibility for their irresponsible actions and BSL supports these people by not placing very harsh punishments on them.
Any dog, regardless of breed, is only as dangerous as his/her owner allows it to be.
Addressing the issue of severe and fatal dog attacks as a breed specific problem is akin to treating the symptom and not the disease. Severe and fatal attacks will continue until we come to the realization that allowing a toddler to wander off to a chained dog is more of a critical factor in a fatal dog attack than which breed of dog is at the end of the chain.
Only when we become more knowledgeable, humane and responsible in our treatment of dogs can we hope to prevent future tragedies.
If things keep going the way they are it will so be the only breeds we can own will be the ones under 10lbs. If you own a large breed of dog it is only awhile that the breed you love will come under fire and banned. Stop it now

Fatal attacks since 1975 have been attributed to over 30 different dog breeds yet all the media can talk about are Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, or Akitas. Size alone is not an accurate indicator of which dogs are capable of killing and which dogs are not. In October of 2000, a baby was killed by a four pound family Pomeranian dog in California. In February of 2002, a Jack Russell Terrier mauled a 6 week old baby in Tennessee.

For an entire category of bites, there is no reporting at all. This is for so called provoked bites. Bites that occur at veterinarian offices, dog groomers, and boarding kennels in many counties are automatically declared to be provoked bites. Those that know dog bite statistics from the inside out are those that work with animals for a living. I recently polled a number of animal shelter workers and this is what they said about dog bites. Most of the bites have been by small unfriendly Terrier type dogs and Cocker Spaniels. Occasionally they have seen a larger dog on a bite case but the vast majority of the bites were from small to medium sized dogs.

The dog groomers I spoke to said most of the bites they see are from Schnauzers, Cocker Spaniels, Westies, Scotties, and Dachshunds.

Next I polled a number of veterinarians. One veterinarian said to me, "Give me a so-called vicious Pit Bull over a Cocker Spaniel, Dachshund, or even a Lab any day!! These are the breeds I have the most problem with." Another vet concurred saying that in years of working at a veterinarian clinic she never once encountered a single vicious Pit bull yet had problems all the time with Cocker Spaniels and Yorkshire Terriers. "

20 years ago when ask, the head of animal control made this statement. BLS was never brought up here agin. There as not been a serouse pit attack here in over15 years. That may seem odd when you know that one of this country's largest dog fighting ring is here. They have tried to shut it down for years now.
If you ban the group of dogs caled pit bull, pwople who use them for illegal purposed will just choose another breed. BLS is like saying you are going to ban a make of car becasue they get in more accidents than any other make. Put the blame where it belongs and make it not worth the price by putting these outlaws in jail for a long time instead of the slap on the wrist most get now

Well, I think pitbulls are wonderful dogs...but as a breed they have severe disadvantages. They need about four hours of excercise a day, are high energy dogs, extremely territorial, and have a grip like vice....if they decide you're a bad person and they bite you...well...you're categorically screwed. keeping that kind of dog in a city...well that's just a terrible idea. that's the kind of dog that needs to have open space. They're just like any other dog, but because they've been raised as fighters for so long, they're usually abandoned and have those pits that have been found and adopted become behavioral problems because of previous cruel conditioning. Obviously banning pitbulls is like banning red cars, based on the fact that pitbulls have caused the most attacks...really the problems is bad training. Pitbulls are first dogs. And most are perfectly wonderful, so long as they have a person that can match their high energy level.

"They" are banning and fearing "Pit Bulls" because of ignorance.

This breed of dog is NOT human aggressive naturally. They are naturally dog aggressive. NEVER was this breed meant to harm humans. They are one of the loyalist breeds out there. A double edge sword this loyalty is....if master says go into a pit and beat up another dog, they will, happily because it makes the master happy. On the other side of the sword...they will not bite their masters because it will not make them happy. This BSL stuff is a very high price to pay for the loyalty.

The reason why these dogs sometimes "snaps" is because they are dogs that need constant companionship. They need to be where their family is all the time. They are NOT "lawn" ornament dogs. Heck, if I was chained to a fence with nobody to play with all day everyday, I would get kinda cranky too! They are not dog park dogs. They are not guard dogs unless the aggressive behavoir is trained and condoned. They are AWESOME family pets and super tolerant with children (supervised..mainly because children can't be trusted with the dog, NOT the dog being trusted with the children)

ALWAYS there is a story behind any attack. The media NEVER plays on the story behind the attack. Fear and proganda is extremely powerful.

Any dog of any breed for any reason has the potential to attack at ANY given time (regardless of any training said dog has).

BAN STUPID PEOPLE. LEAVE THE DOGS ALONE.

PS I own a "Pit Bull" (American Staffoshire Terrier) and he has been brutally attacked by your "family friendly" retreiver. My dog ended up going to the vet...as for the attacking dog's injuries...NONE. This retreiver attacked my dog on our property while my dog was on leash 2 steps away from being inside the house. He nearly lost an eye, needed stitches over his head from the many gashes from the retreiver, and stitches in his jowls from a bite that went through and through. NOT A SINGLE MARK ON THE RETREIVER. So who's the tough guy here?

There is absolutely no justfiable reason for it, and the sad thing it will be the gateway to band other breeds. We should be punishing the owners or the people that turn these dogs mean. If they are not using Pit Bulls to fight they will exploit another breed. The people are the ones who should be punished they are the ones who know whats wrong and whats right.

Perhaps the lineage of pit bulls in our town is more aggressive than others? or not the norm? I was in the vet's office to have stitches removed the other day..and a call came in about a sick pit bull..the vet's assistant told the caller that the doctor doesn't accept pit bull clients...So, then the vet came out to look at my dog, and the assistant told him about the caller..He said, I would like to help all dogs, but if it hadn't been for my steel toed boots, I would have lost my foot to the last pit bull I tried to help..So, never again.
Then, they got to talking about the Chihuahuas puppies that had come in earlier in the day...3 Chihuahuas pups had been in their own yard, playing with children, when a pit bull climbed the fence and killed one and injured the other 2 , one of them died at the vet's..the 3rd one was still in ICU.

I have several local friends who have been attacked by their own pit bulls...None of them were bad owners..but the dogs just 'snapped' and attacked...so, I wonder...Could it be that our pit bulls are just worse than those in other areas? This is a very nice resort community, and not an area with thugs..
However, I did sign the petition to stop the breed ban in our state.
I don't believe in banning any breed, but only that owners are held responsible for ALL dog attacks,, whether attacking humans or other dogs..no matter what the breed..

Personally I rank the pit-bull terrier as the best family dog. It's smart, loyal, loving and completely safe. To ban theme for the actions of other mistreated doges would be the same as incarcerating all young men because of the action of gang violins.

I think you are answering your own question. It is the people who treat the dogs badly, but I do think that is coming to light.I see more & more responsible people actually making a new name for this breed! More abuse is being reported as well as new pups are entering this world, with owners who are more responsible than the abusers we saw before. Like the Rottweiler, maybe they shall be redeemed!!!!!
