The three components of depression are helplessness, hopelessness, and despair. Helplessness is cured by movement. Doing something, even it's just washing the dishes. Later on it will grow into various productive activities that benefit the person emotionally to know that helplessness is not inescapable. Hopelessness is a greater problem. Sometimes there is no hope, and it the end, we all die of something. Most hopelessness is the inability to see past the next few minutes, hours, or days. Despair is more serious. It is the calcification of the soul into hardened, wounded lump of uselessness. People who have reached the stage of despair will commit suicide if their will to survive is compromised by having their pain discounted by family members, doctors, mental health workers, social workers, etc. It is VERY important to acknowledged the psychic pain that people are suffering from, rather than discount it from the start, like saying, "You have a lot to live for", etc. The one thing our culture seems to lack right now is places for the despairing to go and stay safe for a while until their souls begin to heal. Churches used to do that in the olden days. Mental health treatment centers just drug you up and send you back to your hell-hole. Domestic violence shelters work for the battered, because the enemy is someone we can see and hear and feel. "Demons" tearing at the soul are not a recognized form of persecution in our culture. We need psychic violence shelters for the troubled souls out there, to be safe, and to heal, and to learn to live.

Most of the time it is genetic. Some people feel suicidal at a very young age, when they have no worries... Then you find out that there is a history of depression/suicide in their families.
When you come to the point you want to end it, you only see darkness. It is as though there is no light at the end of the tunnel, no hope. You look around and you are not able to enjoy anything. You are numb, dead inside. The load is too heavy to carry and you want to end the suffering. Usually suicide is related to mental illness. Some people commit suicide for material reasons: A lover leaves them , they lose all their money, lose a child...
It usually comes to one thing: Not being able to stand the inner pain and emptiness.
Pretty sad.

The simplest answer I found, when doing research on suicide and suicide prevention: to make the pain stop.
Another answer I found (tho this is less common): "payback" (to hurt someone else for hurting them).
It isn't always about the depression itself, especially since the act is usually committed when depression is lifting and the person is feeling more energy as a result. There's also a further increase when the decision is finally made, contributing to the relief of the symptoms.

The main way people knock themselves off is by over dosing on pills because they see this as not being painful but it is very painful just imagine your stomach on fire for an hour before the drugs do kick in and kill you.
I do know i work in the hospital system and see people coming in 24 hrs a day. Other common ways are hanging, gassing cars out, slitting arteries, jumping off bridges or into trains.
Good luck with your essay

well, my life is so ****** up, i think about suicide at least 6 times a day, i have overdosed twice and spent time locked up in a mental hospital. i am in a day rehab program now, and i am still contemplating suicide. i suffer severe depression, anxiety, ADD and OCD. that, and the build-up of stress and MAJOR family issues, abuse (sexual, physical and emotional) and a number of other issues are the main reasons for my suicidal tendencies and self harm. also, the anti-depressants i'm on have made me more suicidal, which is stupid! and, oh yeah, i am only 17 yrs old.
anyway, i hope this helps...
good luck with your essay!

i know that they say depresssion, among things can lead to suicide. but 6 years ago at the age of 28 my brother committed suicide. and no one not even his fiancee thought something was wrong. it was a total shock, no note nothing. i disagree with the one answer saying those who do it are selfish, i think that the person feels that is the only way out so they don't have to hurt anymore. sure the people left behind have to deal with what has happened. but i also believe that when god says it' s your time it will happen the way he wants it to, when he wants it to.

people commit suicide due to various reasons. i have felt the urge to suicide many times and i know how it feels and also i'm a depression patient. people feel like suiciding when they feel lonely and left out, when they feel they have noone to care about them and they have noone to care for. they feel like suiciding when they know they cant get over a certain problem which they cant get over and also other people who commit suicide are terrorists and such people who are afraid of torture. rape victims also attempt suicide. people who have suffered bad heart breaks feel like suiciding too. but most of this can be corrected by proper counselling, psychological and psychiatric advice.
do ur essay well, all the best! take care

Depression. Illness. Death of family member. Financial problems. Alcoholism. Stress. Mental disorders....Hormones.
I know personally speaking, I have PMDD and I was very depressed with PMS, contemplated suicide each month....for really stupid reasons, but I didn't know it at the time. I only knew what I was feeling and it didn't feel good. I finally went to my doctor and told him I needed to do something about it. I was placed on a medication and it's been very helpful ever since.
Good luck with your paper.

I have attempted suicide and the main reason for doing it was because I felt so isloated and alone even though I had my family around me, they just didn't understand what I was going though.
But overall I think that feeling lonely and depressed are the main two reasons people chose to end their lives.
