It was not taught but recited. Angel Gabriel we reciting verses during a course of about 23 yrs.
The whole Quran came down from the 7th sky to the lower one (which we see above us) in one night in the month Ramadhan. This is the meaning of the verse in surat al-Qadir that : "we brought it down in al-Qadir night" it does not mean it was recited to the Prophet in one night.

According to the written story, Gabriel tooks not less then 23 years to reveal Koran and guiding Mohammad (pbuh) to build the religion of God which in Arab is was called ISLAM.

from Allah (swt) to Muhammad (saw), The Recital (Al Qur'an) was completed within 22 years 2 months and 22 days.

from the first; surah 96 ayat 1 - 5
read in the name of your lord who created (1)
اقرا باسم ربك الذي خلق ﴿1
he created man from a clot (2)
خلق الانسان من علق ﴿2
read and your lord is most honorable, (3)
اقرا و ربك الاكرم ﴿3
who taught (to write) with the pen (4)
الذي علم بالقلم ﴿4
taught man what he knew not (5)
علم الانسان ما لم يعلم ﴿5

until the last; surah 5 ayat 3 (part of ayat 3)
... this day have i perfected for you your religion and completed my favor on you and chosen for you islam as a religion; ...
اليوم اكملت لكم دينكم واتممت عليكم نعمتي ورضيت لكم الاسلام دين3
