Fasting in Hinduism is 'Pratyahara' and 'Upavasha' which have scientific meaning.Pratyahara means withdrawal from normal behaviour. And Upavasha means going closer to God. So one is the cause and another is the effect. While fasting one is, therefore not preoccupied with what to eat and what to drink. The mind is totally involved. It is just not a ritual as many of us do think.

Hinduism is a very lenient religion, it does not imposes, it only advises. In most fasting's, unless you have decided not to touch water or liquid, you can drink.
Mahatma Gandhi, during his 21 day long fasts, used to take spoonful sips of water a few times a day, as he used to say that the body is a temple of God, and in our soul He rests as part of our spirit, so do not torture the body to such extend that it hurts the spirit.

Fasting is a sort of mental restraint. If one is bothered what he should eat and what he should not, better avoid fasting. Whether it is Hinduism or Islam fasting has only one meaning that is to avoid normal food.
