I applied for a capital one card online a while back and have had no problems. The site was secured, they are a very well known company, and they even asked me a few security questions that only i would know the answers to. Its really kind of the same if someone was to steal your application from the mail, although it might be easier these days to steal someones info off a website then through the mail if you knew what you were doing.

Yes, it should be quite safe, however I would still suggest you to apply the credit card application through filling up the forms. That should be even safer. Because if you use online application, yes indeed you can shorten process time and also minimise your inconvenience, but you will never know if any hacker can go into the bank's system or database to get your particulars and bank's info. Think about it and see which is a better solution for you.
