Ask urself the question --- Whats the purpose ----- Moving Pictures (Handycam) or Still pictures(Digicam)

Picture Quality
U can take still pictures with Handycam too.But generally the resolution will not be good ( Generally it will be 1.3 to 3 Mega pixels). Also, u can record moving pictures with many of the digicams too (here the moving picture quality will not be very good)

If u plan to take high quality pictures (5-7 Megapixel, A4 size prints) then definately go for Digicam with video capabilities.

Some of the things that u should look for

Size
Generally the Digicam size is small(Depends on the model)

Optical Zoom
Look for Optical zoom instead of Digital Zoom(software enhanced) in both Digicam as well as Handicam. 3X is OK

Memorey
Buy atleast 1 GB memory if u plan to buy Digicam & plan to use it for moving pictures.

A digicam is used to take still photos of hig quality where as a handicam is used for continous recording of video along with voice.

Digicam can be used to take still shots and movie clips. But it is good for still shots. Movie clip resolution is not as good as a handycam.
Handycam is also used for both the purposes. But it is best for taking movies.
Digicam would be lighter to carry around (small in size)
Talk to the vendor and see which product suits your needs the most.
I guess you could go for a Sony digicam. They provide you with both the features and it is portable and more handy!

Digicams are " Digital Camera " and are mainly used for still photos and to shoot "short film/movie" (Moving images)

Handicam is used mainly for shooting "moving images"
