Are Jews so smart that they actually have people believing that they are chosen without it actually being true.

Both. They are way smarter than their enemies, and of course you only need to read the Bible to see that they are the apple of God's Eye.

You have to understand the mentality of the biblical times...or ethnocentrism in general to put the statement that jews are "God's chosen people" in context.

Back in biblical times there were thousands of different groups of people throughout the middle east region. There were thousands of different religious followings as well. Often times, a tribe or sect had their own God. You could even have different religious affiliations in one family, in fact often times the wife of a man had a different religion than his own. The people to which this verse refers recognized that others had their own gods and thus rightfuly refered to their God as THEIR God. They believed that their God chose them to follow his ways. Judaism is often touted as one of the first monotheistic religions but this only means they worshipped one God. It does not mean that they did not acknowledge the percieved existance of others, which would have been considered not their God and lesser if they believed they existed.

You will find some jews today who believe that they are God's chosen people and that God is the only God, and some may take this so far as to believe they are better than others, but this is not in accordance with judiasm much like racism is not in accordance with christianity even though the bible has been used to support racism erroneously. Your average jew may only believe that they have an obligation to practise judaism and think no less of someone who doesn't. Anyone may convert to even the most fundamental form of judiasm and by jewish law must be accepted as part of the commuity.

The Bible says that the Messiah would be born from God's chosen people, the Jewish race. Abraham was the Father of the Jewish race and Jesus was his descendent. I have often wondered why he chose them, because they were very rebelious against him after he rescued them from Egypt.
And yes they are brilliant people.
