I have a three year old pug who smells awful! He is on a good, high quality food, I change and wash his bedding regularly and he gets a bath often (mainly because he smells so bad!). I have tried everything and even after I just wash him he smells like he hasn't seen a bath in years! Help! I love the little guy and the smell is too much.

The food I have him on his Eagle Pack which does not contain any corn, wheat or other products. It is designed to be a low allergen food (my other dog has bad skin allergies).

Try the medicated shampoos for humans. The odor is coming from the production of excessive sebum (skin oils) and the sebum grows bacteria..so that is what is smelling..It could be caused by hyperthyroid, so his thyroid level should be checked to rule it out..
You can give him a nice refresher dry bath, using Colgate's Men's Shaving foam..just the cheap old fashioned kind..Rub the foam in to the skin, and wipe it dry with toweling..It is good for his skin and coat..I used it on my pug regularly..

(Eagle Pack is a great kibble)

Eagle Pack is a very good food. If you are bathing her more than every couple of weeks, that could be causing the problem. Too much bathing dries out the skin. Could also be a skin infections. Cut back on the baths, use doggie cologne if you must. If not better in a couple of weeks, have the dog checked for skin problems.

Read the label on the "high quality food". If it contains corn, wheat or anything else you can't pronounce, change brands.
Good ones to look up:
Innova EVO (the best in my opinion), Wellness, Artemis, Canidae, and California Natural.
The wrinkles on a Pug's face need to be cleaned. You have to wash their faces and wrinkles with mild soap every week or the natural oils, and moisture in the coat start to stink and causes infections.
Good luck.

After you bath him do you dry him fully? Dog's aren't meant to be wet for long periods of time. I have a mini-weiner dog and she gets a bath every couple of weeks. I towel dry her and afterwards use my blowdryer on warm not hot setting to fully dry her. I know it sounds weird but does her belly or under her armpits smell the worst? Small chubby dogs are prone to yeast infections of the skin...may need medicated shampoo along with the fully drying thing.

I wash my dog every Sunday. By Thursday I pretty much try to cover his smell with Polo Ralph Lauren cologne.

Take him to a vet. He may have an infection on a part of his body that you cannot get at (like the inner ear). If this is the case your vet will have medicines to help get rid of, or at least control the infection, and thus, control the smell.

Does it smell around his face? Sometimes bacteria can collect in their little wrinkles and get really smelly. You may need to wash his face more often...

Change his diet and if that doesn't work then maybe go and speak to your local pet store or vet to see if they have any ideas that you can try. If your bathing him regularly then it cant be because he's dirty. Good luck.

Yeah, lets talk about this "high, quality food" for a sec. What exactly are you feeding it?
