For most squashes, I would peel and cut it into chunks,. Put it into a steamer basket and cook for about 5 to 10 minutes. Test for doneness and remove when you can put a fork into them. Then put into casserole. If you don't have a steamer, put into a pot with water. Only cover the squash about half way. Bring to a boil and then cover the pot. Cook for about 7 to 10 minutes. Test for doneness as above. Hope this helps. My question to you is why do you want to precook?

What kind of squash? Jab it all around with a sharp knife and put it in the microwave for about 4 minutes @ 1000 watts.
If its a very big squash with a really tough skin, you may need to take it out on the porch and hit it with a hatchet. Careful, don't slip and cut yourself. Then take these pieces...estimate how much you will need/ lay them directly on the microwave turntable. If these will be baked...just nuke them till they just begin to soften. Remove the seeds, cut into recipe portions...add whatever and prepare your casserole. If its a butternut, I'd nuke it 4 MINS on one side then turn over and repeat. when you cut it open careful--it will be HOT INSIDE.

Cut in half, scoop out the seeds and strings, put in glass dish with half a cup of water place plastic wrap over it and steam it in a microwave oven. Works every time for me.
Almost forgot, leave the skin on while steaming.

You can cook it in the microwave. You cover it with plastic wrap, and push the cook potato button... :) It should work, cause that is what i do!
