My depression is getting to the point where I'm not myself anymore, I wear a mask to make others happy, but I'm so tired of pretending to be okay. When I'm not. Some people find out that it's a mask, but they don't try to do anything. I want to get better, but I don't need the side effects of prozac and zoloft, or whatever the drug may be.

So my question is this: Are there any alternatives to fighting depression, besides drugs?

You don't need to wear a mask. Try to be around the people who can accept the fact that you are going through a hard time. There is nothing like having to be an actress on top of feeling really depressed.
There are things that can really help with depression other than the pills.
Nutrition can affect your mental well being. Try to eat a balanced healthy diet. No junk food, cut down of sugar... Eat lots of fresh vegetable, grains, beans... Omega fatty acid is amazing for depression, the brain. Add flax seed oil to your diet. one to two tablespoon a day. Vitamin B complex and B 12 are great for depression.
Try your best to not aggravate your depression by drinking alcohol and smoking.
Exercise is crucial. Try to go for walks in the nature where you can feel at peace, near the water, in the park...
Give Yoga and meditation a chance. It will do you a world of good. If you can, try to volunteer so that you can get the focus off your depression and do something positive.
At night try to take a hot bath, add few drops of lavender essential oil. It is very soothing.
Try these methods for a month or so and hopefully you'll feel better.
You can get well if you have the right attitude and determination.
Good luck my friend.

Exercise helps, along with a counselor. There are alot of counselors you can talk to over the phone. No medications involved, they are just there to listen and help you through it. The side effects for drugs aren't that bad. I work at a pharmacy and nothing serious really comes of the side effects. Depending on what medication of course, it might worsen your depression for a while, but then it will come right back around. I think the best thing to do is to talk to a medical professional, they are trained to answer your question. God bless, and I hope happiness and content find you. Happy thanksgiving. =]

I find the music in all those damned depression drug commercials depressing. I hate it so much that I actually hit the mute button when I hear it. Although it's depressing, I'm really not depressed. I'm just finding myself unhappy about that damned music. It's possible all those commercials are having a negative effect on your mood, and you just think you're depressed because of the power of suggestion of all those damned commercials. Visit your doctor, and ask him for his diagnosis. At one time, people went through periods of feeling down. Now that we have all those drugs available, people seem to think they are suffering from serious depression instead. You may just be experiencing some bad days. See your doctor and tell him that if you really are experiencing depression, you want an alternative to drugs. Some doctors will prescribe drugs to people who self-diagnose themselves. It's extra money for the doctor from the drug companies. So, don't self-diagnose. Ask the doctor for his diagnosis, and tell him you don't want drugs. That approach will help keep the doctor honest. In other words, remove the temptation to be a drug pusher.

Yes you can try other things like a good diet and lots of exercise, I know it sounds daft and may seem like an uphill struggle but you will really benefit from it once you've got into the swing of it. Also a good support network will help talk to friends or if they are not understanding then get a counsellor or ring a help line. Look at mind website its full of info.

I understand your dilemma. I am like you. Have you tried counselling? There are no easy answers. Haing a supportive group of friends and family help? What about a therapy group? you usuall find out who your real friends are when they know you have depression. Sometimes people do not always know what to do or say. You need to work out what works for you. What aboutchurch? Having a faith can help.

do a search for the natural remedies.... and try to get at least some help, a councilor or therapist.... get into an exercise club, do Charity events..... be a little league coach..... join a support group..... there are ways to do this with out the drugs, but YOU have to be willing to try and try again until YOU discover what works for YOU...... good luck and God bless

I ,too, have difficulty with depression. My solution is to get outside myself and find something nice to do for an older person or a young child. When one is helping another towards happiness/enjoyment it is impossible to be depressed.
