Yes you can, but only if you know what the term "Indirect heat" means, and it's 15min per lb, if you're going to smoke it do it for the first 30mins

Yes you can barbeque a 20 lb. turkey on the barbeque.

First get a pan and place the it under the grille grates directly below the bird.

If you have a charcoal heat source start them as usual in a pile and then spread them around the pan.
If you have a gas grille just turn it on medium high heat and try to get to 350 degrees.

Cut the backbone off the turkey and place butterflied turkey ribs side down on the grille. This will allow you to place the lid down over the bird and promote even cooking.

Remember to put some water in the pan below to prevent burning juices.
The usual salt and pepper over the skin and consider placing a few bacon strips under the skin and over the breast for better flavor and a moister breast meat.
Depends how hot your grill gets will determine the cooking time from 3 1/2 hrs to 5 hrs. A meat thermometer placed in the thigh should read 170 degrees and the juices should be running clear not pink.
This cooking the turkey on the barbeque, is very useful in clearing the kitchen for the other dishes that need to be prepared. It also was the only way to cook the turkey one year when the power went out due to a high wind storm a few years back.

I barbequed a turkey last year with wood coals and beer and it was the best turkey I have ever eaten....It took about 6 hours to cook on the grill.

Sure keep the BBQ lid closed and cook at 350 for 10 minutes per lb. Don't forget to baste.

Sounds like Kamikaze kid's got it down. It's all about indirect, moderate heat that you can continue to fuel as needed. You could cheat and start it in the oven, then baste it with your sauce and finish it on a grill with indirect heat.
