I fish for fun and release everything I catch. Has anyone here used barbless hooks, and if so, what did you think of them? Did you lose more fish than usual, or none at all? Can anyone tell me where I can find them, aside from paying too much at a bait shop? Didn't notice any at Walmart when I was there, but didn't know about them yet at the time, so may just have missed them. Thanks.

Smash down the barb on some of the hooks you've got already. The actual barbless hooks sometimes have a bump where the barb would be,but I've never used em.I've fished barbless hooks before, and unless the stream or lake you're fishing requires them, they're garbage. You'll lose a lot more fish with the damn things.
And yes I know what I'm doing.

I've used Barbless hooks before. I'm not as big a fan of them as I am barbed hooks. I guess you can call me cruel. I understand the humaneness of them with being easier to pull out but you don't see to many people using barbless hooks these days. Never had a big difference in losing fish. Most larger sporting good stores have barbless hooks. *****, Sports Authority.

purchase hooks from your suppliers and then crimp down the barbs with pliers. Now you have barbless hooks. You may loose more fish than with barbs but your angling technique with keeping a firm line on the fish should keep the hook set untill you land it. please don't let the line get slack. To counter the problem of line getting too tight adjust the brake on your reel to approximatley 1/3 the braking strain of the line. Good luck

I've used them, and yes, you lose more fish.
You can make "barbless" hooks yourself by either crimping the barb closed or by snipping it off w/ a pair of clippers.

The idea behind the "Barbless" hook was to reduce the amount of tissue damage when removing a well set hook. They aren't that much safer, but less likely to tear sensitive tissues to breathing and vital organs. The only hook that's safer is the Barbless Circle hook.

I've made a few, but seldom used them.
Take a regular hook and pinch down the barb with a pair of pliers, or file it off with a diamond file. Works just fine, and much cheaper.

Try finding them at Bass-Pro Shop. There is only a couple different styles. They are in the Bass-Pro Master Catalog.

i've used, and i actually like it, my wife doesn't eat fish so we get to catch and release most of the time... you don't have to loose more fish, it all depends on if you know what you're doing or not. if you don't even know when the fish is biting it'll be hard to keep it on.

You can get barbed hooks and cut the barbs off yourself, with a pair of diagonal cutters (dikes).
