The correct spelling is "Rennes les Chateau" and the story is of the priest Sauniere, who discovered some documents that had been hidden in the churchyard of les Chateau in the 1700s. The whole story is a huge mystery and is an enormous, long story. The short version is that when Sauniere became priest at les Chateau in 1885 (thereabouts) he started making some strange renovations to the church that no one really understood.

One of the biggest renovations was some huge Gothic pillars with visigoths at the top, and the reason (most people believe) is that the pillars contain the books of Mary Magdalen, The Gospel of Luke, and the Gospels of John. These documents, if that's what he really found, would be worth a fortune to the church, and was probably the basis of the rumor that he was blackmailing them.

There is a website that you can read more about it: (my recollection of the story is kind of dim, but I know it has connections to the Priory of Scion)
