Its actually the hair in your nose that makes boogers. They are the filtration system. Small particles of dust and pollen from the air get trapped in the nose hairs and then also moisture leaks down form the sinus cavity and voila buggers.

You're right. It is the mucus that traps all the bacteria, dust, pollen, etc. in it and then when you blow your nose, you'll get rid of it. Your body cannot take in those materials and it can damage your respiratory systems so the boogers are actually a form of getting rid of the bad stuff.

Your respitory system produce mucus so it could trap particles so it wont build up in your lungs. That's why mucus is sticky. The so called boogers is dried mucus.
