There's a sensor hole at the end of the nozzle that shuts it off at the first hint of backwash

It sense through a a sensitive pressure differential component installed at the station (not at the holder). You will never got a chance to dip the end of the petrol outlet hose to the tank fill with petrol. Once detected a slight change in pressure, the machine will stop.

If you want to experiment it.

1. Use your hand to close the outlet nozzle fast creating a "change in pressure". See whether it will stop or not.

It will stop due to differential pressure which will gets created when the tank is about to fill
