The real causes of dandruff
Contrary to popular belief, dandruff is NOT caused by poor hygiene, dry scalp, frequent shampooing or excessive styling and blow-drying.

Research has proven that the leading cause of dandruff is a microorganism called Pityrosporum ovale (P. ovale), a fungus that normally exists on everyone's scalp, even those without dandruff. Dandruff occurs when there is an overabundance of P. ovale coupled with an increased sensitivity to the fungus. This increased sensitivity can be triggered by many factors, among them:
Climate
Hormones
Diet
Heredity
Stress

As the body fights against P. ovale, the natural process of scalp cell renewal is accelerated, causing dead cells to fall off faster. The result is the flaking, scaling and itching of dandruff.

Prevention And Treatment Of Dandruff

Shampoo:
Keep a clean scalp. Use shampoo regularly. Let shampoo remain on the scalp for five minutes before you rinse thoroughly. You can choose from many OTC shampoos that are available in the market for dandruff. These shampoos may contain active compounds such as selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, tar, zinc pyrithione, etc. Experts believe that alternating shampoos after every wash may be more effective. You have to use some of these shampoos carefully. Always read the instructions with attention.

Avoid Stress:
Avoiding stress may help you fight dandruff.

Avoid Chemical Treatments:
Avoid chemical treatment of hair. Avoid using hair care products that are chemically based such as sprays, pomades, etc.

Diet:
Eat a healthy and well balanced diet.

Sun:
It is observed that instances of dandruff reduce in summer. That provides a thought that sunlight may be good for treating dandruff. But you have to carefully protect your body with sunscreen before you walk out.

DANDRUFF

What is DANDRUFF?
- Dandruff is characterized by small, loose flakes of dead skin on the scalp or trapped in the hair.
- Dandruff is not dangerous, does not cause balding and is not contagious.
- Dandruff is a natural process and it can not be eliminated or cured. Dandruff can only be managed and controlled.

Causes of DANDRUFF
- Dandruff may be caused by several different factors, but the exact underlying cause of dandruff is unknown or is at least not agreed upon by the medical establishment.
- One possible cause of dandruff may be sensitivity to, or overgrowth of, a fungus present on the scalp.
- Another possible cause may be overactive oil glands on the scalp which cause an increase of the natural skin shedding process.
- Another possible cause may be clogged oil glands on the scalp. These clogged pores can lead to over-drying and flaking of the skin.
- Poor diet, poor hygiene, genetic disposition, hormonal imbalances and infections may all possibly contribute to dandruff.
- Some external contributors to dandruff may include infrequent shampooing of the hair or inadequate hair rinsing, improper use of hair-coloring products, cold weather, dry environment and tight fitting hats.
- Dandruff may become worse with stress or if the patient is "run-down".

Symptoms of DANDRUFF
- Unsightly flakes or scales are typically present on the scalp and trapped in the hair.
- Whether or not these flakes are "oily" or "dry" may hint to the underlying cause of the dandruff.
- Dandruff rarely has any symptoms but itching of the scalp may occur.

Treatment and prevention of DANDRUFF
- Dandruff can disappear suddenly without treatment or may take multiple weeks of treatment to improve.
- Prevention of dandruff may be achieved by shampooing regularly with a mild, non-medicated shampoo. The scalp should be massaged gently to loosen flakes and the hair and scalp rinsed thoroughly
- Anti-dandruff shampoos containing coal tar, pyrithione zinc, salicylic acid or selenium sulfide are available without a prescription. (Specific products may be recommended by a physician or pharmacist.)
- Stronger anti-dandruff shampoos and lotions are also available by prescription.
- If the flaking skin is isolated in one area or in multiple areas, then the condition may be a skin problem other than dandruff and a physician should be notified.

Can't really say. I am black and I know that I get dandruff when my hair is really dry (we have to keep our hair "greased" to store moisture). Although, my white friends that get dandruff have really oily hair, so, I can't say. Sorry.

dandruff is either a dry scalp, or fungus in your scalp. try a shampoo, made by neutrogena. it smells really strong and looks like molasses (what can i say, its active ingredient is tar) but it works like a charm! sorry, i forget the exact name.
