if it's a "gift" for the host, then it would be rude. but if i bring a bottle of vodka to a friends house and it doesn't all get drunk... i take it home with me. i think it is only rude in an extremely "formal" situation.

It surely depends on the people! Some friends don't care a bit what you bring, if you take home the leftovers, etc., as long as you have a good time. Others would notice and think one cheap or selfish.
Personally, when I give a gift, it's given, my regards go with it. The receiver may do whatever they want with it.
If my bottle of booze weren't opened at a party, I'd think the host/ess would be pleased to have a starter for the next wingding.

When visiting someones home it is proper etiquette to bring a gift with you, alcohol, such as Wine or a Spirit is common courtesy. If the household are non drinkers, then you shouldn't bring alcohol at all.

The golden rule here is to not leave with the gift you brought, because it's the rudest thing you could possibly do. Remember the Seinfeld episode with the Marble Rye?

If she really wants a drink at a non drinking home, tell her to bring it anyway, it's just as rude not to serve the wine, or have drinks prepared as it is to take the wine back.

General rule of thumb is the host keeps the bottle of alcohol. If you bring a bottle of wine to a party most hosts usually open it and serve it with the meal. It would be rude to ask to take it home with you, or expect to have it returned. I guess I might take it back if the host insisted no one would drink it and I really should have it.

If she knows beforehand that noone at the party drinks, it would be insensitive to being alcohol. Conversely, if the hosts, or anyone else drinks but they just don't feel like drinking, it is very rude for your friend to ask for her gift back. A gift once given no longer belongs to the giver.

It would be inappropriate for your friend to bring alcohol unless she was specifically asked to or plans on using it as a hostess gift. If it's used as a hostess gift, the hostess is not obliged to share it particularly if it doesn't go with the meal or there isn't enough for everyone.

If she brings it to drink herself, it's very bad form. Plus people are definitely going to assume and talk about her alcohol problem.

Overall it's best to leave the booze at home.

Well it's a toss up...I would expect a guest to probably take it home....think about it... if you bring food to a potluck usually I would bring the un-eaten portions home....or maybe just ask the party thrower if they want the booze to make it less rude......it can seem cheap though.

yes that is extremely rude .
like you bring a gift and then take it back .
if no one drinks it you leave it for the host to enjoy later or pour it out on another visit
everybody hates people who do that
and so would you
suprising that you have to ask

No it is not rude, she is taking it for everyone to drink, which is very generous... But it is not rude to take home any that might be left over...!

Problem solved; She needs to drink everything that she takes. Get drunk, fall down and have a good time.
