Short answer is get on the internet, look up Anton Szandor LaVey who was the founder of the Church of Satan in 1966. I am sure you can find alot of info using that name as a starting point. He also wrote a book The Satanic Bible which I believe was published by Avon books originally, you may be able to find a copy on Ebay or Amazon. He believed in Satan as more of a symbol of worldly desires than as an actual entity,or at least so he claimed. But in modern satanism he was the most famous and pretty much utmost authority so it's a good place to start.

I think it's an interesting philosophy (I would hesitate to call it a "religion" because of the lack of an external Deity), but one that I couldn't personally follow.
I think LaVey did more harm than good to it by calling it "Satanism", because the momentary joy of saying "Up yours, Christians!" has been outweighed by the inherent misconceptions that the name has.
If you don't worship the being that you're using in the name, then don't use the being in the name in the first place.
To PlanetDan and ByDeRule: I'd like to know how Aleister Crowley could have been a "Satanist" in the modern context, when LaVey (who wrote the Satanic Bible - not Crowley) didn't even found the Church of Satan until almost twenty years after Crowley's death?

I don't think most "Satanists" really understand about worshiping Satan. If you want to know what really goes on behind the scenes, in the unseen, read "A Trip into the Supernatural" by Roger Morneau. You can find it on Amazon.com. He began initiation into a group of people who actually communicated with Satan and his angels. Fortunately he got out alive, and wrote about his true experiences. I would recommend it to anyone.

I am educated on the subject...I am not a Satanist...I am an atheist... The term Satanist is used to scare weak minded christians. The LaVey variety satanists (church of satan) are all atheists anyhow. They follow the logical laws of human nature and harm no one......shhhh dont tell anyone....they might wise up. They use the name satan as it represents nature and it has been demonized. Picture this....try stirring ignorance with a stick....it is like stirring frozen molasses with a warm straw.

I know that satanists, contrary to popular belief, do NOT worship Satan. Satan is more of a figurehead, like a representation of rebellion and individualism that satanists try to achieve. Other such figureheads include Loki and other literary archetypes that personifies a positive image of pride and mastery in opposition to servitude, faith, and humility.

In short Satanism is looking out for number 1. Serve your self and no one else.
For more info you can look up the subject on www.wikipedia.com or look up Alister Crawly, man believed to have written the satanic Bible.
My opinion is to be careful when dealing in such things. The Spiritual is real and can be dangerous.
Note: I am a christian and I do my best at not being bias thank you. May God aid you in your search for truth.

Don't read the Satanic Bible out loud unless you can deal with what will follow. Read it silently, to yourself. Saying certain passages out loud will bring you a whole lot of company that will follow you around for years. Other than that, don't try to debate the subject with a Christian. It will just get you even MORE unwanted followers trying to "save" you. Have fun & don't take what you read or hear seriously. It is just as ignorant as any other organized religion. Enjoy. :o)

The basic idea behind satanism is that a person defines and lives by their own morality. That person does not subscribe to a set moral code.
