I'm 5'9", left-handed and want to buy some starter (probably used) clubs to take a few lessons before spending too much to get into the sport. How long should the clubs be? What else should I look for?

you need to be fit for them go to the company web sites and look for a demo day in your area. The length of the clubs stays the same most of the time, it's the angle they change.

A standard left hand set will do nicely to start off with. In order for a golf club to be fit properly the length and lie angle of the head are important. In order to know the correct lie angle you must first have somewhat of a consistant swing. So any left handed set will do , just go out and swing away for a while.

After a few rounds, ( so as not to ingrain bad habits ) you should see the pro at your local course for some instructions and then maybe getting fit for clubs.

Just a note, when getting used clubs check the grips, worn out grips are generally smooth and not good to play with, I would suggest getting a used set regripped at your local golf shop right away.

Just get a standard set to start because if you are just starting you will be making a lot of swing changes in the beginning and each one will affect any custom fitted club. So I do not recommend getting anything custom fitted. At 5'9" standard length will be fine. I am 5'10" and have been playing for sometime and have never bought anything but standard length. That includes a custom set I have.

The easiest way to learn golf like a pro is by following "The Simple Golf Swing" program. It's primarily a 31 page eBook that teaches golfers how to make solid contact with the ball, how to avoid hitting fat, how to avoid slicing, how get more power, accuracy, and consistency in your swing. Consistency being the number 1 golf skill.

You not only get the eBook though, you also receive a ton of extra material including video, lessons on putting, driving, chipping, sand play etc. Here is their official site: http://www.golfswingguru.net

A standard left hand men's set should work out fine as you are a beginner. As you progress with lessons you can ask the pro who's teaching you about custom clubs and their benefits. Have fun learning and good luck!

You should get a full set standard clubs...

Driver, 3wood 5 wood
3 - 9 iron, PW and SW.
Steel shaft, regular flex
Club design - Off set, perimeter weighted.
1 glove for your right hand

That is all you need before going to the driving range to practise.
