I believe under the Patriot Act banks are required to have your social security number as a precaution against money laundering.

US Bank www.usbank.com offers a pre-paid VISA card. Its nice because its issued by a real bank and is not some over the counter supermarket VISA card. You can refill the card at any US Bank location and it comes with a PIN so you can use it as an ATM card as well. In addition, I believe it does "NOT" say anything about being a gift card on there. You can buy prepaid credit cards now. One place that I know sells them is Rite Aid. You don't have to give your ssn and you can add money to it when ever...

I think you can get a pre-paid credit card at Walgreens - you usse what you pay into it.

I do not know of any online sites, but you can purchase one in person at your local mall or bank.
