My daughter is 14 months old and she still has not said one word. She babbles a lot but has not said anything that I can understand yet. When should she be able to say some words?

kids say first words at different ages....

i had one daughter that said "car" and "there" and SEVERAL other words at age 9 months......i had another daughter that babbled until she said "papa" at 1 1/2 years.....(and she's my "talker" today) i have another who signed *everything* from age 6 months on...and still signs when he talks.....

so....short answer is the same that everyone else gave: kids will talk when they feel like talking. they practice in the background (listen in on that....it's fun :) ) but they will *demonstrate* the skill whe they *know* they are ready. kids are just that way.

My first child was advanced and was speaking in full sentences at 8 months at 4 months she could say words such as kangaroo. On the other hand my second child of average intelligence didn't speak until around 12 months. All kids are different.I think that your child is normal and perfectly fine.Look online for 14 month old milestones or 14month old skills. There should be a list see what all your child can do and what your child can't make that your priority for activity time.A child does need adequate stimulation and they learn from you.Do you talk to your child alot? You should talk all the time!!!! Working with your child is a must.Videos like babyeinstein are great and reading to your child will help them with expressing themselves and encourage them to use words. We also do baby sign language and even though my oldest is now 5 she still knows all her signs and adds to it.Hope this helps.Don't be worried, do the checklist and then if you still feel worried talk to your child's ped. and voice your concerns. If you stay at home with your child make sure you are talking alot and if your child goes to daycare etc make sure your child is getting adequate attention!!!

my lil sister is 1 and some odd months and she still isn't talking. The mom is a little worried cuz my bro's baby is talking and she is 6 months younger. The mom thinks it is because my sis has no desire to talk and I can see that my sis's mom is one of the over obsessive mom's who gives the baby every thing she needs and use to spend every second with her baby. Even though she would be exhausted at the end of the day and in really bad mood cuz she spent all day tending to the child's every need she couldn't seem to parent in any other way. I don't know if my sis's development is being hindered by her overly obsessive mother or if it is just how some babies are that way. I read somewhere Einstein didn't talk until he was three. Got kicked out of grade school and was home schooled until he applied for college and was rejected. He was told he had an advance understanding in mathematics but lacked in every other area. During college he skipped most of his classes to study physics in the library and passed by studying other classmates homework. He was so unpopular with his professors (known as a smart a*ss someone who went against the grain) that no one would recommend him to continue on his schooling to get his PhD but despite it all..... well you know the rest of the story.

She should be saying some small words now. Nothing more than simple everyday words. But make sure when she asks for things you dont respond to her grunts and moans. If she points too a cup she wants. Ask "Would you like this cup?" See how she responds and say "When you want a cup you say Mom may I have that cup" Do not baby talk her. And bend down and hand the cup to her and say "cup" If you give into her grunts and moans she has no reason to want to talk because she sees grunting as effective communication.

Good luck. If you are ever concerned speak to your pedi. The sooner a speech problem is detected the more help is available and better success rates.

i ahve no children but i started talking at 8 months and soon after was making complete sentences....i also have 2 cousins 9 yr old girl and 2 1/2 yr old boy......the girl started talking fairly early i guess around the 10 or 11 month mark....but the boy was a really late bloomer....he has just now gotten to where you can understand almost everything he says....but dont get me wrong...he is very smart..so it really has nothin to do with intelligence...some kids just develop quicker than others...so i really wouldnt worry..your daughter will be fine i would just keep working with her if i were you.....one of these days you'll be wishing she would stop talking!! lol!

I have 12 month old twin boy and girl, from 8 months i think they were saying mama and Dada but in my heart i know they were just making sounds, but now they both say 'gog' when they see the dog and say Dada when i get them out of bed in the morning. I think the best thing to do is talk a lot to your child and emphasise everything around her. Good luck and i bet it wont be long you were wishing her to be quite again!

My daughter started using sign language when she was about 10 months old to "talk" back to me. Her first sign was "milk" which she would sign emphatically first thing in the morning when she wanted to nurse. She started speaking when she was about 12 months, with "eat", "craka" (cracker) and "mi" (milk). Try starting with some baby sign language to move along her communication. You can try babysigns.com for some great information. She should start saying some words soon... just keep talking to her and engaging her in conversations. The more practice they have, the easier it comes.
