Take the cork and insert the dry side into the bottle. The moist side is always thicker.

I assume you mean to put the cork back in after you open the bottle.

The easiest way is to put in in "backwards" from how it came out. The end of the cork that was at the top of the bottle isn't swollen up like the end that was in the bottle. Just give it a twist while you push it in. Leave about 1/2 inch sticking out.

If you have sparkling wine or Champagne, you're just out of luck. You have to drink the whole thing.

small screw and a small hammer and gently tap the screw into the cork and down into the bottle...

then when you want to take the cork back out, use pliers and pull on the screw.
