I've been having some debates lately with people at the gy. A handful of us say it's better to work out all of your muscles in one day, rest a day, and then continue the following day. Others say it's better to do slightly shorter workouts but focus on just 1 or 2 muscle groups, and then work different muscle groups every day.

Anybody have any information on what is actually better for building muscle?

Well, it depends. When you're just starting out, maybe for the first week or two, it's ok to do your whole body every other day or third day to allow your body to get used to lifting. After that, you should definitely split up your workout. You shouldn't work a particular muscle group more than twice a week. A good rule of thumb is to give a muscle group three days or so to recover.

A good basic routine is:

Day 1 - Chest/Triceps/Calves/Abs
Day 2 - Legs/Biceps
Day 3 - Shoulders/Back/Calves/Abs
Day 4 - Rest

(you can overload calves since they are in use all the time)

There are many different routines out there and many different philosophies, so experiment and find out what works best for you. Remember that what works well for Mr. Olympia won't be suitable for someone starting out.

It depends on what your trying to accomplish, If your body building, the training regimen usually is 3 days on 1 day off and you would train your whole body by the 3rd day( chest & tries, back & bies quads & hams). Training this way would make your muscles bigger and harder. Training your whole body in 1 day is more like a cardio work out which would make your muscles longer and leaner. Theres a lot more to it but thats basically it in a nut shell.

Talk about a loaded question!!

There is no right answer to your question because neither method is superior. They both have merit for different reasons. You should probably do a little of both. Any one program followed for too long is going to stop working at some point.

It depends on your goal. if you want to lose weight-whole body is best. If you want to shape certain areas then targeted work outs are better.

it depends on your desired endstate. if you want to sculpt your body, then i would suggest the second option. if you want to lose weight then i might go with the first option. what ever you do, i would highly suggest a combination of weights and cardio
